BASILICA OF SAINT FRANCIS

The construction of the basilica of St Francis began two years after the Saint's death, under the direction of Brother Elias, vicar general, architect of the order and faithful friend of Francis. The foundation stone was laid by Pope Gregory IX on 17 July 1228.

BASILICA OF SANTA CHIARA

The building is dedicated to a well-known Assisi figure, St Clare. Clare was born in 1193 into a wealthy family and, after refusing to marry a nobleman, went to the Portiuncula, where Francis was staying....
